Lonavala and Khandala form a unified, highly popular twin-hill station resort enclave at an elevation of 622 metres on the sweeping Sahyadri ridges of the Western Ghats. Located along the high-traffic corridor linking Mumbai and Pune, the region is globally known for its dramatic mountain geography, comprising near-vertical cliff drops, deep green valleys, and seasonal waterfalls. During the monsoon season, the entire plateau transforms into a romantic landscape completely wrapped in thick, low-flying clouds and rolling mists. The towns act as a primary leisure playground for urban vacationers, with a distinct mixture of historic British sanatorium layouts, modern luxury villa developments, complex ancient Buddhist rock-cut caves like Karla and Bhaja, and local traditional confectionery markets.
The peak season to experience the twin hill stations is during the monsoon from June to September for mists, and October to March for cool weather.
Lonavala is two hours from Mumbai and it shows — come on a weekday or not at all. The monsoon is the reason, and the walk up Lohagad or Visapur is the point, not Bhushi dam, which is a crowd standing in a spillway.
Developed initially as a strategic transit pass route under the Maratha Empire, the plateau was later structured into a prominent summer sanatorium station by the British in the early 19th century. The outer ridges preserve the ancient 2nd-century BCE Karla Caves, housing one of India's largest rock Buddhist chaitya prayer arches.
Excellently connected via the high-speed multi-lane Mumbai-Pune Expressway. It hosts its own railway station with direct local and express train connections from Mumbai and Pune every hour, with luxury state buses stopping continuously daily.
