Ranthambore National Park is one of the preeminent and largest wildlife conservation sanctuaries in Northern India, known for its thriving population of the endangered Royal Bengal Tiger. It lies in the Sawai Madhopur district, where the ancient Vindhya and Aravalli mountain ranges converge, the landscape comprises rugged rocky cliffs, dry deciduous forests, and interconnected lakes. The park's unique visual identity is defined by the massive 10th-century Ranthambore Fort, which sits inside the forest lines. Tigers are frequently observed hunting in broad daylight across the historic stone ruins, palace pavilions, and lake fronts, creating an unmatched wild landscape profile. A short history

Once the private hunting grounds of the Maharajas of Jaipur, centred on a 10th-century fort built by the Chauhan dynasty, Ranthambore was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1955 and became one of the original nine Project Tiger reserves in 1973, its ruins now doubling as backdrops for some of the most photographed tigers in the world.

When to go

The park runs safaris from 1 October to 30 June, and October to April is the comfortable half of that.

Why visit

Book the safari online as far ahead as you can: zones are allotted rather than chosen and the better ones go months in advance. Closed through the monsoon, open October to June. The fort inside has a working Ganesh temple, so pilgrims share the track with the jeeps.

Cultural notes

Originally functioning as the private, exclusive royal hunting grounds for the Maharajas of Jaipur, the territory was declared a protected sanctuary under Project Tiger in 1973. The central Ranthambore Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site housing an ancient, highly vital Trinetra Ganesha Temple.

How to reach

The primary rail gateway is the Sawai Madhopur Railway Station, located just 11 km from the main park gates. The closest domestic air hub is Jaipur International Airport, situated 160 km away, connected via smooth state highways.

A tenth-century Chauhan fort standing inside the tiger reserve, founded under Sapaldaksha and added to by the kings who followed him, UNESCO-listed since 2013 with the other hill forts of Rajasthan. It sits high enough to give the clearest view there is over the park below. Entry is free and separate from the safari, because the Ganesh temple inside is a working shrine receiving pilgrims — which makes this the one part of Ranthambore you can walk into without a permit or a jeep booking. It is a real climb, with langurs along the path who are entirely used to people carrying food.

Leh & Ladakh

Zanskar Valley

Zanskar is one of the last genuinely difficult journeys left in India, and that is the whole appeal. The valley is cut off by snow for around seven months of the year. In summer a single road comes in over the Pensi La from Kargil, and it is long, rough and worth every hour of it. Padum is the only real settlement. Phuktal monastery is built into a cliff cave above a river and takes a walk of several hours to reach — there is no road to it, which is why it feels the way it does. In deep winter, when the road closes, the frozen Zanskar river itself becomes the route: the Chadar trek, walked on the ice in temperatures well below freezing. It is a serious undertaking, not a holiday, and it needs a proper operator and real cold-weather experience. It has also become less reliable as winters warm, and trips are cancelled. If you are coming in summer, budget more days than the distance suggests. Landslides close the road, and there is no alternative route. July to early September for the road. Late January and February for the ice.

Maharashtra

Bhimashankar, deep in the Sahyadri hills of Maharashtra, is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and the source of the Bhima River. Surrounded by a wildlife sanctuary that shelters the rare Indian giant squirrel, it combines a major pilgrimage with lush Western Ghats trekking.

Assam

Kaziranga National Park

Kaziranga National Park is a vital wildlife conservation sanctuary spanning over 430 square kilometers of alluvial floodplains along the southern banks of the Brahmaputra River in Assam. The unique landscape comprises a dense marshy terrain dominated by towering elephant grass, shallow reed swamps, and open sal forest canopies. The national park is known for hosting over two-thirds of the world's entire surviving population of the endangered Great Indian One-Horned Rhinoceros. The reserve floor operates under strict environmental regulations, split systematically into four safari ranges. Bagori range remains popular for early morning elephant-back safaris, allowing close, safe tracking lines to observe rhinos grazing peacefully in the high morning mists.

The best months to visit are roughly November to February, when seas are calm and skies are clear; the monsoon (June to September) brings rough water and many beach shacks shut. Plan water sports and swimming for the dry winter window.

Leh & Ladakh

Tso Moriri

Tso Moriri, or Mountain Lake, is an offbeat high-altitude lake tucked away at an astounding elevation of 4,522 metres on the Changtang plateau of southeastern Ladakh. The body of water spans roughly 19 kilometers in length and is entirely fed by glacial meltwater from surrounding snow peaks exceeding 6,000 metres. It is protected under international environmental treaties as part of the Tso Moriri Wetland Conservation Reserve. Unlike Pangong Tso, Tso Moriri is far quieter, less commercialized, and rawer for it. The cobalt-blue waters are flanked by the small nomadic settlement of Korzok, which houses an ancient mud-brick monastery. The surrounding marshy wetlands provide sanctuary to rare and endangered Himalayan migratory birds.

Sariska, set in the Aravalli hills near Alwar, is a tiger reserve known for its dry forests, ancient temples and the dramatic Kankwari Fort. It made conservation history as the first reserve to successfully relocate tigers after local extinction.

Jaipur

Jaipur

Jaipur repays getting up early more than almost anywhere in Rajasthan, because by ten the coaches have arrived and Amber Fort stops being a fort and becomes a queue. Be at Amber for opening. Walk up rather than taking the elephants — the welfare of those animals is a long-running problem and a jeep does the same job. Inside, the Sheesh Mahal is the room everyone photographs, but the Ganesh Pol above the second courtyard is the better piece of work. Hawa Mahal disappoints people, and it is worth knowing why before you stand in front of it: it is a screen, one room deep, built so the women of the household could watch the street unseen. There is almost nothing behind the facade. The good view is from the rooftop cafés opposite, looking back at it. Jantar Mantar is the one to book a guide for. Without someone to explain them the instruments are handsome shapes; with someone, they are a working observatory and the visit turns into the best hour of your day. For fabric go to Johari Bazaar, for everyday chaos and better prices go to Chandpole. October to March. April onwards the stone gets too hot to touch by mid-morning.

Udaipur

Udaipur

Udaipur, the 'City of Lakes', sits among the green Aravalli Hills, built around a chain of interconnected lakes created over the centuries for water and defence. The largest, Lake Pichola, is the visual centre of the city, its shores lined with white marble palaces, bathing ghats and lakefront hotels. The grandest is the City Palace, which is really eleven palaces built against each other over four centuries by successive maharanas — which is why the inside is a maze of levels and courtyards rather than a single plan. Udaipur has a noticeably slower pace than Rajasthan's other big cities. In bad drought years Pichola has emptied completely, so if the lake is the reason you are coming, check before you book.

Jaisalmer

Jaisalmer

Jaisalmer is built from the same yellow sandstone it stands on, which is why at six in the evening the whole fort looks lit from inside — and why at midday it looks like nothing much at all. Time your first look for the last hour of light. The fort is one of very few in the world still lived in: several thousand people, with shops, homes, temples and plumbing inside the walls. That is what makes it extraordinary and also what is slowly destroying it, because the drainage was never built for modern water use and the bastions are being undermined. Conservationists ask visitors to sleep outside the walls rather than in the fort hotels. It is worth honouring. Patwon ki Haveli is the finest carved stone in the city. The Jain temples inside the fort are quieter and, to my eye, better. For the desert, the choice matters. Sam dunes at sunset is a full circus of camels, jeeps and loudspeakers. Khuri is further out, plainer, and gives you the silence people actually come to the Thar for. November to February. Nights in the desert get genuinely cold — bring more than you think.
