Wildlife Park

Dudhwa National Park, part of the Dudhwa Tiger Reserve in the Terai grasslands of Uttar Pradesh near the Nepal border, protects one of India's finest surviving stretches of tall wet grassland and sal forest. It is a stronghold for tigers, the rare swamp deer (barasingha) and reintroduced one-horned rhinos, along with elephants and rich birdlife.

When to go

November to May is the safari season; winter is pleasant and pre-monsoon months improve sightings, with the reserve closed during the rains.

Why visit

Terai grassland on the Nepal border, and the swamp deer here are the largest population left anywhere. Rhinos were brought back in 1984 into a fenced block. Closed through the monsoon, and even in season you may see nobody else all day.

Cultural notes

Dudhwa was central to efforts to save the swamp deer and to reintroduce the one-horned rhino to the region, and remains one of the last great Terai wildernesses.

How to reach

By Road and Train: Dudhwa is reached via Palia, with Dudhwa and Mailani among the nearer railheads. By Air: Lucknow is the nearest major airport, roughly 230 km away.
