A short history

According to the official Banda district government site, the fort was built with brown stones by Raja Guman Singh in the 17th century and later repaired by Kirat Singh in 1746 AD. It was linked to the Bundela reign and to descendants of Maharaja Chhatrasal. The fort became significant during India's 1857 uprising: rebellion against British rule began on 14 June 1857 under Nawab Ali Bahadur II, and a major confrontation occurred on 16 April 1858 when British forces under Whitlock arrived; approximately 3,000 revolutionaries reportedly died defending the fort. Graves of these freedom fighters remain at and around the fort. A secondary source gives a differing builder attribution that could not be resolved.
