A short history

The site had earlier habitation, including Jain temple activity in the 9th-11th centuries, and was under Sikarwar Rajput control until the 1527 Battle of Khanwa. Akbar founded Fatehpur Sikri as his capital in 1571, partly to honor Sufi saint Sheikh Salim Chishti, who had predicted the birth of his son (later Jahangir) at Sikri in 1569. The city was renamed "Fatehpur Sikri" (City of Victory) after Akbar's 1573 Gujarat campaign, commemorated by the Buland Darwaza. It served as capital for about 14 years, featuring the Jama Masjid, the Diwan-i-Khas, and the Panch Mahal. Akbar abandoned the city in 1585, and it was fully abandoned by 1610, with water-supply failure a commonly cited factor. UNESCO inscribed it as a World Heritage Site in 1986. Why visit

Akbar built a capital here and abandoned it within fifteen years, most likely because the water gave out. That is why it survives so completely — nobody came after him to build over it. Salim Chishti's marble tomb is still a working shrine.

Cultural notes

Inscribed as an UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986, the city was built to honor the Sufi saint Shaikh Salim Chishti, who correctly predicted the birth of Akbar's heir, Emperor Jahangir. The towering Buland Darwaza gate was added to celebrate Akbar's military conquest of Gujarat, standing proud as a structural milestone of victory architecture.

Saputara is Gujarat's only hill station, which makes it modest by Himalayan standards and genuinely useful if you are anywhere near Surat or Ahmedabad. It sits at about a thousand metres in the Dang forests near the Maharashtra border. The lake at the centre is the focus — boating, a promenade, and a ropeway up to the sunset point. None of it is dramatic. What is good is the drive in through the Sahyadri forest, the Gira waterfall after the monsoon, and the tribal museum, which is small and better than it needs to be. The monsoon and the weeks just after it are when this place justifies itself. The Saputara Monsoon Festival runs through those months, the forest is fully green and the waterfalls are actually falling. By March the hills have gone brown and the lake is low. Set your expectations to a cool weekend in the woods rather than a mountain trip, and it holds up. Two nights is right; a week would be too long. July to November.

Ahmedabad's old city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the way to see it is a walk that starts at seven in the morning. The heritage walk from Swaminarayan temple to Jama Masjid takes a couple of hours and goes through the pols — dense residential quarters, each historically one community, with shared courtyards, carved wooden facades and bird feeders on tall poles. Doing this without a guide means missing all of it, because the pols look like ordinary lanes from outside. The Sidi Saiyyed mosque's stone jaali — the tree-of-life screen — is the image the city is known for, and it takes five minutes to see. The Adalaj stepwell, half an hour out, takes longer and gives more. Gandhi's Sabarmati Ashram is plain and unglamorous by design. Sit in it for a while rather than walking through. Gujarat is a dry state; alcohol is not served. The city eats vegetarian extremely well as a result — the Gujarati thali here is one of India's great meals. November to February. April and May routinely pass forty-two degrees.

Varanasi

Varanasi is the oldest continuously lived-in city on earth and it will either be the best three days of your trip or the worst, with very little in between. Take a boat at dawn, not at sunset. At first light the ghats are working — people bathing, washing, praying, exercising — and the boat is quiet. The evening Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh is a genuine spectacle but you will watch it shoulder to shoulder with several hundred phones. At Manikarnika, bodies burn around the clock and have done for centuries. You can stand and watch; it is not hidden and nobody will stop you. Do not photograph it, and do not pay the men who offer to take you closer for a donation to the wood. Both requests are as old as the ghat. The galis behind the river are the actual city. They are too narrow for cars, you will get lost, and getting lost is the point — but keep the river to one side in your head so you can always walk back to it. Sarnath, where the Buddha gave his first sermon, is forty minutes away and a complete change of pace. Go on the day Varanasi has worn you out.

The Taj Mahal is a renowned white marble mausoleum built on the southern banks of the Yamuna River in Agra. Commissioned in 1632 by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan to house the tomb of his favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal, the monument stands as the pinnacle of Mughal architectural achievement. The entire structure is symmetrical and brings out flawless geometric design. The complex features a grand red sandstone gateway, a formal geometric garden divided by long reflecting pools, and a massive marble plinth topped by a central dome and four identical minarets. The white marble surfaces are intricately decorated with fine inlay work using semi-precious stones, creating a changing color spectrum that shifts from soft pink at dawn to brilliant white under noon skies and shimmering gold under full moonlight.

Almost everyone rushes Agra as a day trip from Delhi, and almost everyone regrets it — the Taj deserves a dawn and the city has a second monument nearly as good. Go to the Taj at sunrise, and know that it closes on Fridays. The marble changes colour through the first hour in a way no photograph has ever conveyed; by nine the light has flattened and the crowd has arrived. If you only have one slot, take that one. Agra Fort is the thing people skip and should not. Shah Jahan spent his last years imprisoned in it, looking downriver at the tomb he built for his wife, and you can stand where he stood. It is a working piece of Mughal military architecture rather than a monument to grief, and it is quieter. For the view most people never see, cross the river to Mehtab Bagh in the late afternoon and look at the Taj from the back, across the Yamuna, with nobody in front of you. The city outside the monuments is hard work — persistent touts, heavy traffic, little to hold you. Sleep here for the sunrise, then move on.
