A short history

Emperor Akbar built the fort in 1583. Historian Catherine Asher notes it is regarded as the largest fort Akbar built, employing between 5,000 and 20,000 workers, with three galleries flanked by high towers. In 1600, Prince Salim (later Emperor Jahangir) rebelled against Akbar and briefly held his own court at the fort before reconciling with his father. Following the 1765 Treaty of Allahabad, the British East India Company garrisoned the fort, formally acquiring it in 1798 and establishing it as a military depot by 1801. The fort is classified by the Archaeological Survey of India as a monument of national importance. [Source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allahabad_Fort]
