Dampa Tiger Reserve, in western Mizoram's Mamit district on the Bangladesh border, is the state's only tiger reserve, set up as a wildlife sanctuary in 1985 and brought under Project Tiger in 1994. Spanning roughly 500 sq km of core forest in the Lushai Hills, it is now known more for its clouded leopards than for rarely-seen tigers.

When to go

October to April is the season recommended by reserve management, for drier trails and better wildlife visibility outside the monsoon.

Why visit

Explore a remote, little-visited forest rich in clouded leopards, gaur, hoolock gibbons and hornbills, with jungle safaris, forest treks and birding across one of Mizoram's largest protected areas.

How to reach

By Road: Dampa Tiger Reserve is about 127 km from Aizawl via NH-54 through Mamit, reaching gateway villages such as Teirei, Phuldungsei and Damparengpui; some interior areas are accessible only on foot. By Air and Train: Lengpui Airport, about 32 km from Aizawl, is the nearest airport; Sairang Railway Station, about 15 km from Aizawl, opened in September 2025 as Mizoram's first direct rail link.
