Hyderabad is two cities that do not entirely acknowledge each other, and the old one is the reason to come. Charminar is the centre of it, and the crowd around it is part of the experience rather than an obstacle. Climb it early. Around it, Laad Bazaar sells lacquer bangles by the metre, and the lanes behind Mecca Masjid are where the city eats. Chowmahalla Palace, a few minutes away, is the Nizams' court and it is quiet and largely empty of visitors. Golconda is the fort to give a proper half day. Go in the morning. The acoustics at the entrance genuinely work — a clap at Fateh Darwaza carries to the top of the hill, and it was a warning system, not a trick. The Qutb Shahi tombs next door are usually deserted and are the better half of the same trip. The biryani argument is not settled and never will be. Ask three Hyderabadis and get three answers; that is the correct outcome. October to February. May here is genuinely punishing, and Golconda is an exposed climb with no shade on it.

A short history

Founded in 1591 by Qutb Shahi ruler Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah as a planned city with the Charminar at its centre, Hyderabad passed to the Nizams in the 18th century, who ruled it as one of British India's largest princely states until 1948 — a Qutb Shahi and Nizami layering visible in the Charminar, Golconda Fort and the city's distinct Deccani cuisine and dialect.

Why Hyderabad (Charminar & Golconda) matters

India's fourth-largest city and a former princely capital, home to the Charminar and Golconda Fort — once the world's main source of diamonds, including the Koh-i-Noor.

Why visit

Hyderabad is two cities: the Qutb Shahi one around Charminar and Golconda, and the glass one out at Hitec City. Eat in the old city, and climb Golconda in the first hour after it opens, before the stone gets hot.

Cultural notes

Founded in 1591 CE by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah, the city flourished as a brilliant global capital of trade, world-famed for its historic diamond mines that produced legendary gemstones like the Koh-i-Noor. It reached its cultural and financial peak under the Nizam Dynasty, creating a unique syncretic culture known as the Deccani tehzeeb.

How to reach

Excellently connected globally via Rajiv Gandhi International Airport and three major multi-platform railway stations including Secunderabad Junction. A world-class network of radial expressways and automated metro lines facilitates quick internal transit across the metropolis daily.
